Don't Blame the Bagels

When things go wrong on the db front due to me ignoring the facts, it's very tempting to put the blame outside of myself. DB is so hard to live with. I hate it. Blah blah blah.....

I work in an office of 90 people. It is an unwritten tradition that people bring treats on their birthday. Usually it's bagels, because Brueggers is nearby and they deliver for free (!!)

If asked the question re which food really plays havoc with my bg, bagels are near the top of the list. Those dang bagels. They always cause me to spike. It's not fair.

But it isn't really the bagsl's fault. A standard Brueggers bagel has over 60 grams of carb. I did not realize this until 10 years ago when I was in the hospital and the dietician was discussing what I usually had for lunch. I told her I brought my lunch to work but on occasion I'd go and get a bagel sandwich. She told me that a B. bagel had four carb exchanges. Yikes.

I am very sensitive to carbs in the morning and sometimes even delay breakfast until about 9 a.m. My ins/carb ratio is 1/5 at the beginning of the day, but by evening I'm at 1/20. Thinking from a logical standpoint, there is no way that I'm going to come through 60 grams of cho at 7:30 a.m. withput a spike. Rapid acting insulin is great, but it can only do so much.

So this morning when we got the "treats in the lunchroom" e-mail, I had to consciously remind myself that a better choice would be to take 1/2 of a bagel and save it for later in the morning. It worked. And involved only a small compromise.. Hopefully I can practice this enough times for it to become automatic, minus the self-pity.

To the collective bagel community, I apologize for casting you as the villain. Please forgive me.

Happy Independence Day. Enjoy the long weekend, travel safely, and cherish the freedom and opportunity this country affords us.

Hi Kathy - My problem food is cereal. But you're right; it's not the cereal & bagel's fault. They're yummy! We just have to make compromises & get on with life, don't we? Thanks for the reminder of not blaming the food. Happy Independence Day to you, too!

Kathy,
Bagels and pizza are the two hardest foods for me to adequately bolus. I guess a little part of me never really believes how many carbs are in a bagel, so I underbolus.
Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine. (Dixie certainly will! :-)

Actually, the "traditional" way of making bagels actually involves using flour which has significantly higher fiber content, but because we live in an ultra-processed, highly-refined society (LOL), today, its darn near impossible to get processed flour which has virtually ANY fiber in it. On the other hand, there are manufacturers who have recognized the health benefits of increasing the fiber content of their bagels and have introduced products to address this. The biggest issue seems to be that the average size of a bagel is more than twice what it was back in 1975 (therefore, you could probably do just as well with a half bagel) ... that's something our "supersized" society has helped perpetuate, but if you stick to frozen Lenders, you're likely to have a bagel that is closer to what the original Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe brought over with them!

Oh bagels. How I'd love to eat a WHOLE bagel with gobs and gobs of cream cheese right now (and not spike or feel guilty). Sigh. Oh well - the bright side is that if we could eat those bagels every day, just think what it would do to our weight. :)

I was just thinking a bit more about this post and the whole deal is that there's a foot-stomping munchkin in me that says I want the WHOLE thing! - no matter what size the "whole" is..........

Donna - there are many non-db
people who make compromises with food also. In fact, some of the people in my office never have a bagel - they just don't.

Molly - oh don't even mention pizza - I just can't do it. It has just come to mind that I've gotten over my craving for pizza. When I go to Old Chicago I always have buffalo wings for my "treat" - high fat, but easy on the bg.

Karen - many people limit their food consumption for weight control - and I could certainly stand to drop more than a couple pounds.

Scott - I have a Jewish friend who's parents are first generation immigrants. They think Brueggers is the biggest joke in the world '"oh Kathy, who would eat such a thing?" They shop at a kosher market that also sells baked goods and yes, their bagels seem tiny in comparison.

Oohh, bagels. My weakness too :( Like you I just can't eat them the same way anymore. Ugh...Same goes for flavored coffees, even the "sugar-free" ones. I think it's the creamer additives or something, but if I drink even a few sips I'm in the stratosphere. Hope that never happens with my beloved Diet Coke ;)

Happy 4th to you, too!

Hi Kathy,
I've never gotten into the flavored coffees. But, like I said, you can't have everything.
Have you tried the Coke Zero? I just love it, and today I found a cherry Coke Zero that is very tasty........

Kathy.......
NYC has and makes the best bagels anywhere.
The carbs of a normal sized bagel is 35gms. The ones by you must be giant sized.
Being in the *Food Business,* frozen bagels are crap and should never be purchased.
If you ever come to NYC, I will treat you to the best bagel in the city with your choice of sweet butter or cream cheese and a great cup of coffee to accompany the treat.
For your 1:5 ratio, you will only need 7U of fast acting.

Hi BetterCell - yes, I guess there are regional/geographical differences in food, even if it goes by the same name. The "super-size me" culture is not doing anyone a favor.
PS I have also heard that NYC has the best Italian Ice..........

...........and the best pizza made in wood fired ovens.

Bread in pretty much any form is my eternal weakness. I'm trying an experiment around bread and will post on it eventually if it flies.

I have become fond of my market's mini bagels which are 15 grams of carbs and I don't feel guilty eating one with a shmear of light cream cheese.

Zaz, when I read you comment I still heard that little voice saying, "I don't want a mini bagel - I want a WHOLE BIG ONE". I gotta shut that little bugger up.
